Salzburg, Austria

Dear Grace,
The next stop of our Nierengarten European vacation was in Salzburg, Austria. The little bit we were able to see in the couple of days we were there, left us wanting more. The weather once again, was absolutely beautiful. The locals kept reminding us that it typically rains this time of year and that they were experiencing a record number of consecutive sunny days. There are two sides of the city which are divided between the river- the Old Town and the New Town.

We started our Salzburg experience with a private tour. We thought we signed up for a group city tour (probably bc of the inexpensive price), but it ended up only being us with our own local college student. We took you to the house from the Sound of Music, explored the Fortress Hohensalzburg, visited Mozart's home where he was born and lived as a child, and enjoyed a proper Austrian meal which included Wienerschnitzel and one liter glasses of beer.

The oldest restaurant in Europe is located in Salzburg and the movie, the Sound of Music, was filmed there. The movie was appropriately played 24/7 in our hotel. Every time we were in our room, however, the same part was on. We took a cool cable car ride up to the fortress, wandered the streets and checked out the inside of St. Peter's Church. Enjoy!
Love, Mummy
PS When you travel with me, you usually end up with creative pictures.

The cable car ride was EXTREMELY steep and surprisingly quick.
There were gorgeous views from the top- too many to include all of our favorites so we just picked the ones with us in them.

This is when things became interesting...
I still don't know who had more fun...you or your Uncle Matt?

The best part about the Sound of Music being filmed in the little town of Salzburg is that most of the people from Salzburg have never seen the movie (including our tour guide)!
The hills (aka the mountain we climbed into) are alive with the sound of muuuuuuusic. la, la, la, la...
